In Shadow Hearts: Covenant

Karin was born to a noble family from Munich, who had recently fallen into hard times.

In Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Karin is sent to Domremy to help capture it for the Germany Imperial Army by General Heimann. However, the attack on Domremy is prevented by a Demon who attacks Karin and her party, killing many men in the process.

Karin returns to General Heimann and tells him of the failed attack. He insists she return to Domremy to guide Cardinal Nicholas Conrad. Before returning, she travels with Nicolai to Apoina Tower so he can collect an item to exorcise the demon that awaits them.

In Apoina Tower, Karin and Nicolai speak – he explains that he needs her to feel safe with regards to all the monsters that appear within the tower. She tells him that the monsters and spirits in Apoina Tower feel malevolent, compared to the demon she met – who seemed sad to her. They progress up the tower and battle the monster guarding the Holy Mistletoe, which is required to exorcise the demon in Domremy.

Upon returning to Domremy with Nicolai, Karin progresses through the village and is attacked by possessed toys which the villagers have set up to prevent further attack on the town. However, Karin and Nicolai are able to reach the church where they find that the demon is actually a a man named Yuri who has the ability to turn into a demon. Nicolai stabs Yuri with the Holy Mistletoe in order to seal his power. Yuri and Karin are then rescued by Blanca and Gepetto who bring them to a cave outside of Ardennes Forest.

Gepetto tells Karin that she cannot return as she will be killed if her old unit finds her. He suggests that she travel with them to Paris where he has an apartment. Travelling through Ardennes Forest, Yuri collapses and Karin tries to wake him. Unable to, she and Gepetto build a fire and talk. Gepetto tells her a little of how he and Yuri met, reassures her that Yuri is human, but he has the ability of fusion which allows him to turn into a monster. However, while Yuri is asleep, a monster appears from within him, and Karin is forced to wake Yuri up, as she has no means of defense. Yuri and Gepetto are able to defeat it with help from Blanca, and they continue travelling to Paris.

In Paris, Gepetto gives her some of Cornelia‘s old clothes to wear. Yuri and Gepetto admire her in her new outfit and she slaps them. yuri has suggested going to find Roger Bacon in Nemeton Monastery as he may know more about the curse of the Holy Mistletoe. Karin suggests travelling via Le Havre as it is a port town that isn’t as guarded as some others. They agree, and Karin insists on coming with them as she is now being hunted by Sapientes Gladio and wants to know the truth behind why. Gepetto offers her a rapier that belonged to him in his university days and she accepts.

When Karin and the party reach Le Havre the have no money for a boat to Southampton. She joins the towns vigilantes with the others as there is a reward being offerd to keep the town safe from a bandit.

Karin and the others encounter the bandit, who’s is calling himself “Grand Papillon”, but they manage to chase him off before he can do any more damage. The next morning, the party is asked by the Vigilantes to try and capture Grand Papillon, and are led to his hangout at the town tavern. Karin is given one half of their reward before undertaking the task. However, they see Grand Papillon playing with some children so are dubious about his being a bandit.

Karin addresses Grand Papillon to ask why he is threatening the town, and finds out he is Joachim Valentine and he is trying to protect the tavern from the Mayor and his vigilantes as they are trying to overthrow the owner and take the tacern for themselves. They decide to return the mayor’s money

They explain to the mayor that they won’t capture Grand Papillon for him. Unhappy, the mayor sends his thugs to attack the party and to capture the children that live at the tavern. Gepetto and the party, now including Joachim, go to the Wine Cellar to rescue them.

Karin travels with Yuri to Southampton, but the road to Cardiff is blocked. An alternate route via The Rhondda Mines is offered, but Karin is very hesitant to go through them, as they are full of monsters and it seems dangerous. However Yuri and Gepetto agree that they must travel to Wales as quickly as possible. Karin spends the night drinking with Gepetto.

In Wales, Karin is told by Yuri about how 6 months prior, he defeated a God here. They look for Roger and do not find him, instead find Lenny, who informs them (unwillingly) that Roger has been taken to Florence. Yuri and Karin fight Lenny, forcing him to retreat and they are applauded by Thomas, who saw Roger get kidnapped. He tells them to go to Florence to meet with Carla.

The party ask Carla to help, but she refuses unless Karin “uses her body” to perform a sexy dance. Karin refuses and instead Carla says that they must go to Manmariana Island to find a flower, with the help of Lucia.

Later, while in the search for Roger, Karin returns with Yuri and the others to Nemeton Monastery to find the Émigré Manuscript. Within the ruins, she becomes a target to psychic attacks, and hears voices of dead spirits claiming that he grandmother’s soul is in danger. Yuri slaps her and tells her not to listen to the spirits. Grateful for his actions, she invites him to come to Munich with her after their quest is over.

Karin travels with the party to Petrograd where they find that Rasputin has become very powerful and is trying to gain control of Russia. She then travels to Goreme Valley where Bishop Jovis is able to give them a hint on how to defeat Rasputin. Rasputin has made a soul pact with the demon Asmodeus and one of the only ways to defeat Asmodeus is with the demon Amon, who lives within Yuri’s soul.

Karin arranges to go to the depths of Yuri’s soul with him, and they travel to the Graveyard together. Karin can see the strange tree growing within him and becomes concerned. They meet Jeanne, and Karin apologises for what happened in Domremy. Jeanne explains that she knows that everyone is just trying to find their own way in the a changing world and continues to look for Yuri’s happiness.

They find a door within the Graveyard that leads to Mirror Castle which is where they have to fight mirrored versions of themselves to progress to where Amon resides. They are able to draw him out from within a mirror and defeat him. This breaks the curse upon him and they are now able to use his power to fight back against Rasputin.

Back in Goreme Valley, Bishop Jovis falls ill. Yuri blames himself for this and Karin tries to reassure him that the ritual was done for the good of the world and for the happiness of all people.
