They act as the “care-takers” of the Graveyard and Yuri’s soul. They summon the monsters that appear in the Graveyard in order to help Yuri clear his Malice meter. They explain to Yuri why it is important to clear his Malice.
There are four masks in total. From Left to Right:
Each mask represents a different aspect of Yuri’s psyche: Fear, Envy, Anger and Hate. The Sword Mask appears to be the leader.
When Alice arrives in the Graveyard to save Yuri’s soul, she gets cursed by the Four Masks. She agrees to give up her life, body and soul to help save him and they take up her offer.
Once this deal has been made, the Four Masks tell Yuri that they will come after him if he accrues enough Malice instead of Fox Face who no longer holds a threat over Yuri’s head.
Before the party go to the Float, Alice is resting and awakens within the Graveyard for the last time. She is alone, and approaches the Four Masks. They tell her that the time has finally come for them to take her soul. They ask whether she regrets giving her life up for love and she denies it. They open the Door to the Depths of the Evil Dimension, where she meets with The Protector of the Four Masks – Atman – and they are able to claim her soul as payment for saving Yuri.
To initiate the Good ending, the party must do battle with the Four Masks – Yuri fills his Malice meter to maximum and they appear outside of the Graveyard to claim his soul. However, he is able to weaken them all.
Once Alice has gone through the door in the Graveyard, Yuri will run after her. By the time he reaches the Masks they try and prevent him from going through, but they are in a weakened state and he is able to fight his way past them.
Later in Shadow Hearts it is possible to defeat the Four Masks in order to get the Good Ending. In order to fight them you must obtain the Oath Grail from the London Rats once Calios Mental Hospital has been completed.
To battle the Four Masks, Yuri must allow Malice to accrue rather than clearing it at the Graveyard.
If they are fought in the incorrect order they are a lot stronger than if they are fought using the Oath Grail to weaken the Grail Mask which in turn weakens the Gold Mask and so on. The order they must be fought in to weaken them is Grail Mask -> Gold Mask -> Sword Mask -> Staff Mask.
The order the player encounters the Four Masks is random – if the player encounters a mask before they are ready to battle it, they can escape from the battle.
Once they have been defeated they can be fought again after they have died, however they are very weak.
After every battle, no matter which mask, at which strength, they drop 5 of every soul. Each Mask has SP Lowering as an attack so the party must be equipped with Will Powers for fighting them.
The Grail Mask is water type. If the party has the Oath Grail, Hit Area Doubling will be in effect, allowing the player to more easily strike the Judgment Ring. The Grail Mask will attack with Dragon Cry – an all party Water attack. It will drop the Amber Ring which will allow resistance against Earth Attacks.
Grail Mask (Strong)
Grail Mask (Weakened)
Grail Mask (Defeated)
The Gold Mask should be fought after the Grail Mask, provided the party has recieved the Oath Grail. If the party has not defeated the Grail Mask, Popping Shock will be in effect. Popping Shock makes the Judgment Ring smaller.
The Gold Mask is Earth type and will use Strike as an all party Earth Move. The Gold mask will not take damage from physical attacks so it is best to have a party that focuses on magic attacks.
The Gold Mask drops the Carnelian Ring which cuts fire damage in half.
Gold Mask (Strong)
Gold Mask (Weakened)
Gold Mask (Defeated)
The Staff Mask should be battled after battling the Gold Mask. If battled before defeating the Gold Mask, Tight Shock will come into effect – halving the size of the Judgment Ring, and not allowing use of items.
The Staff Mask is Fire Type and doesn’t take damage from magic. It drops the Lazurite Ring after battle, which cuts Air damage in half.
Staff Mask (Strong)
Staff Mask (Weakened)
Staff Mask (Defeated)
The Sword Mask appears to be the leader of the Four Masks and must be defeated after the other three. If it is battled before defeating the other three it will use Fast Shock, which speeds up the Judgment Ring and doesn’t allow for items to be used.
The Sword mask is Ait Type and will use Shock Barrage, an all-party air attack. It will drop the Obsidian Ring after being defeated.
